Development of Progenesis Technologies LLC
Progenesis Technologies, LLC is a spin-off from Marshall University in Huntington WV. It was established to commercialize the patent-pending discoveries by Dr. Hongwei Yu concerning the signal for alginate production and genetic alteration of the regulatory genes of the alginate pathway that allow Pseudomonas sp. to maximally produce this exopolysaccharide.
Progenesis is primarily a research and development company. Our strategy is to demonstrate the feasibility of manufacturing our genetically-engineered bacterial alginates on an industrial scale for a competitive price. We will then either out-source the commercial production of the products or partner with companies to manufacture and sell the bacterial alginate products. The following are the products we are developing, in order of introduction to the market place, and their global market (2008):
- Super-absorbent bacterial alginate for use in moisture control for the sanitary pad and agricultural/home gardening markets. This will be an environmentally friendly alternative to polyacrylate - $2.3 billion
- Bacterial alginate genetically engineered as a radioisotope decontamination agent for military, Homeland Security and Civil Defense use. US market - $600 milion
- Customization of bacterial alginate for maximum product performance in the food and cosmetic industries - $350 million
- Bacterial alginate genetically engineered for maximum delivery and slow, sustained release of each specific drug and for wound healing. Total drug delivery market - $88 billion. Estimated alginate applications - $2-3 billion.
